In our house, it's "Orange you glad I didn't say banana?" Slays my three year old every time!

That would actually make sense.

Maybe she was laughing so hard because she knew the real joke and messed it up on purpose and isn't it funny that a 6-yr-old would say it like that? So maybe, just maybe, the joke's on you! (Nah. I didn't think so either) (p.s. PT - Thanks for your latest comment. It felt good to hear you there.)

My pleasure Ayelet. I check in on you regularly.

But to debunk your theory, here's her followup joke:

Knock Knock.

Who's there?

Yonina.

Yonina who?

Yonina ate a banana hahahahahahaha.

Kids don't really get humor until they reach a certain age. Until then we laugh at them, not with them. But they don't care. They just like the laughs.

I don't get the potato chip joke. I told Sweetie the orange/banana one about a month ago, but she's not there yet. So last night, she and Tiny were knock-knocking, and they can't even get the pattern right, but they were laughing uproariously. Lesson: When learning to tell knock-knock jokes, practice on 4yos, not 8yos. You'll be much more encouraged.

With a 4 year old, you don't even have to tell a joke. just say something and start laughing. They dig it.

That's true. Yesterday, Sweetie brought up the orange/banana one yesterday and I explained it again. She gets it now (yea!) so she told it to me three times in a row. The funny thing is, she didn't start laughing until I confirmed that she told it right!

I didn't get the orange joke till I was like 18 since in the midwest Orange sounds nothing like Aren't --- so the Banana you glad I didn't say orange was the kind of thing I found funny as a kid =).

Odd. I'm a lifelong Wisconsinite, and I got the orange = aren't the first time I heard it. I think the connection is because aren't you is usually pronounced aren'tcha.

I found the banana you glad i didn't say orange to be funny too.
