via my sister-in-law: We were walking on Sunday and passed a tree with a gate around its trunk (only in NY!). Hen (3) explained, "They thought the tree was a monster."

A mundane explanation: In our New York City outer-borough (non-Manhattan) neighborhood, those "gates" are sometimes called "tree surrounds," and are used for the purpose of keeping dogs from using the tree trunks as lavatories.
I like the "monsters" explanation, though. :)
