Sponge Bob

For some reason KJ (3.5 y/o) likes Sponge Bob. He's never seen the cartoon but he says things like, "Would Sponge Bob like it?" or "Is he like Sponge Bob?" The other day he got off the bus wearing a Sponge Bob jacket. I asked him, "Where did you get that jacket?" He said, "It's mine." The teacher aboard the bus said, "He told us that was his." KJ said, "BYE." wanting her to hurry and leave. Silly boy. I snuck it back to the teacher in a black plastic bag the next day. What is the deal with Sponge Bob that children like him?

Sponge Bob is a portal to vice. One day he's sneaking Sponge Bob jackets, the next, he's smoking in the men's room.

Sponge Bob is awesome! We can't blame SB.

Yeah right PT. The weird thing is, we've never seen any cartoons of it, only previews.

Even though my three-year-old has also only seen SB in previews, she finds any mention of this repugnant character strangely, magnetically compelling. I don't get it either. To me, SB is just a few rungs above a Russian children's video that my husband remembers from his youth and bought for our kids called 'Nu Pogodi' in which a scraggly old cat chainsmokes and makes trouble. Needless to say, we 'lost' that video - oops!
